A folding carton is a precision-engineered object. Its success or failure on a retail shelf, in a food service kitchen, or inside a pharmaceutical supply chain is determined by decisions made long before it reaches those environments.
In April 2026, the Flexographic Technical Association(FTA) held its Annual FORUM INFOFLEX in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, bringing together the flexographic community to network, share and collaborate on the future of flexo for the packaging industry.
Our CEO, Rob Frost, returned from those sessions with a takeaway that did not come from any single presentation. It came from the cumulative weight of what every conversation in that building was actually about beneath the technology talk: the printers and converters who are winning in this industry are the ones who understand their customers’ businesses deeply enough to anticipate problems before they surface. The equipment is table stakes. The understanding is the advantage.
That perspective is worth putting on paper, because it explains the decisions we have been making at Pak-Pro, including our recent investment in a new sheeter, and the direction we intend to keep moving.
What Rob Heard in Milwaukee and What It Confirmed
The FTA Forum INFOFLEX is where the packaging and printing industry comes to take its own temperature. Brand owners, converters, printers, equipment suppliers, and material vendors all share the same floor. What emerged from that convergence in 2026, across session after session, was a consistent theme: technical competence is necessary but no longer sufficient to win. Those companies building durable customer relationships are the ones treating packaging not as a commodity transaction but as a shared business problem.
Rob summarized his thoughts in this note to our team:
“Being customer-centric means going beyond great service. It means understanding our customers’ timelines, production pressures, inventory needs, and what success looks like for them. Some customers depend on flawless print quality and shelf impact. Others rely on speed, flexibility, and responsive supply. The same capability stack, a flexographic press, a die cutter, a coater, serves those two customers very differently if the supplier actually pays attention to which customer is standing in front of them.”
For us at Pak-Pro, operating two specialized facilities across 110,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Marietta and Toccoa, Georgia, this is not an abstract principle. Our Toccoa facility runs food service packaging for quick service restaurants and food manufacturers, where heat-resistant substrates, grease-resistant coatings, and high-volume output define the work. Our Marietta facility runs high-design retail and premium beauty cartons, where soft touch coatings, foil stamping, embossing, and dual in-line coating systems are the differentiators. Those are two completely different definitions of customer success, and we serve both, because we have taken the time to understand what each one actually needs.
The New Sheeter: What the Investment Means in Practice
A sheeter is the machine that converts large-format paperboard rolls into press-ready sheets. Paperboard arrives from the mill on rolls weighing hundreds of pounds, wound tight and sized for efficient transport. Before a sheet can be fed into a press, it must be cut to the correct dimensions, with grain direction running the right way for fold integrity and with consistent caliper across the sheet to prevent ink spread variation during printing.
Our packaging engineers think about sheeter performance at the front end of every production decision. Sheet size drives press efficiency: a sheeter that produces inconsistent sheet dimensions forces makeready adjustments that eat into run time. Grain direction errors at the sheeting stage create cracking at score lines in the finished carton, particularly for materials with heavier caliper used in retail and pharmaceutical applications. Sheet flatness affects registration. Registration affects print quality. Print quality affects shelf performance.
Our new sheeter investment addresses all of these dependencies at once. It increases our sheeting capacity, which reduces the bottleneck between material receiving and press-ready sheet supply. It improves sheet consistency, which directly benefits print registration and scoring accuracy across both facilities. And it gives us more flexibility on sheet size, which matters for customers whose order volumes or carton dimensions require precise sheet layout optimization to minimize substrate waste.
For a customer whose product has a tight launch window, faster and more consistent sheeting means fewer delays before press time. For a customer managing inventory across SKUs with different carton structures, better sheet size flexibility means we can accommodate their packaging program more efficiently. The machine is a capital expenditure. The reason for it is customer lead time and consistency.
Investment in Equipment, People, and Service: Why All Three Matter Simultaneously In the Packaging Industry
Equipment investment is visible — in the plant and as a capital expenditure on the balance sheet. What is harder to document but equally consequential is the investment in the people who run that equipment and in the service systems that connect our production to our customers’ planning cycles.
Pak-Pro has been manufacturing folding cartons for over 70 years and that history has taught us one consistent lesson: the customers who stay with a supplier as they grow are not staying for the lowest price. They are staying because they can rely on us to get their packaging right. And if there’s ever an error, we fix it directly and quickly.
That kind of service requires people who understand both the technical demands of folding carton manufacturing and the operational realities of the customer’s business. It requires a culture where every person on the floor understands that the carton they are producing is going into someone’s product, onto someone’s shelf, and into someone’s hands.
